I'm reading through a Guns&Weapons for law enforcement when I see one of those full page book ads has a VHS tape on how to build a home-workshop .50 cal sniper rifle. The thing is by some fella named Bill Holmes.
Is this for real? Does a dremel tool, some screw drivers, and a couple of tubes of thermal goop qualify as a home-workshop?
I'm guessing it's either using off the shelf parts of some sort, or else you need have access to some pretty decent equipment and have a millwright in the family.
It's no railgun, but it would be nice View image: /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Bill Holmes is quite the weapon designer. He has a couple other videos/books out. Submachine guns, things like that. He got busted by the ATF a couple of years ago on bullshit (which is pretty standard for ATF, but I digress...)
From what I know, as long as you have some hand tools and basic power tools (drills, etc) and can get required materials, you are golden.
Anyway, a .50 is about $2K to start, which of course is no scope, bipod or ammunition....
TR
Molon Labe!

To do it right, you'd need a full-size machine shop / woodshop and the skills to go with them, unless you plan on buying some premade parts. Bolts are easy to make compared to getting rifling into a barrel. If you're not a gunsmith, and you do decide make your own firearm (with or without instructions) I wouldn't suggest doing anything more with the finished product than hanging it over the fireplace...

AFAIK, in Canada .50 cal anything <---teh illegal contraband, so building one (and keeping your trap shut about it) was kind of a neat idea.
The ad was from Paladin Press, the tape was 'The Home Workshop .50-Caliber Sniper Rifle with Bill Holmes', part #10010254, $34.95US.
I don't have access to a complete workshop, but I do have friends at a local foundry that can crank out some pretty cool stuff.
Is this the sort of stuff Customs would confiscate at the border? The tape I mean...not the gun.

What are you planning to fire out of these things? It's not like you can walk into Wal-Mart and buy .50cal ammo. Building your own from the inert round in that kit will give you one (1) shot before you have to get the black powder, funnel and pliers back out to refill the cartridge (not to mention forging a new projectile).
That kit seems vaguely cool and stuff, but I'll take 30-06 and a good scope over something my lame-ass tried to build.
I have to admit tho' that having a real .50cal sniper rifle would kick ass. I may have to start saving my money. God bless America.
Vader

Thats the funniest ad I've ever seen... Boy i want one!
I think the real advantage of making your own sniper rifle would be having it totally untraceable.
Think about it. You didn't buy the gun from anywhere, so it has no numbers, no ballistics history, no gun shop guy remembering you. As soon as you fire your one shot take it back home and melt down/mill out the barrel to reduce it to scrap metal. Burn any wood parts. Gravy.
OTOH I wouldn't trust the accuracy and I'm a pretty passable machinist/damn good woodworker.

There was an article in Newsweek or Time that talked about the Israelis picking off people from a mile or more away.
Last summer during the Tall Ships fandango I toured the JFK. In the hanger area the USMC had a spread of all of their weapons (light and heavy mortars, .50 caliber machine guns, .50 caliber sniper rifles, etc.) and the operators to talk about them. I asked the .50 caliber sniper dude about his weapon. He looked at the scout sniper next to him with the little gun and said, "Him, he's one shot, one target. Me, one shot, multiple targets."
If that's not machismo...
--Mike

Description of the video...

quote:
Using a surplus M-2 heavy machine gun barrel and an assortment of readily available raw materials, the author teaches you how to make a .50 caliber, bolt-action sniper rifle in your home workshop. All critical parts of the construction process are covered, including making the upper and lower receivers, trigger group, bolt and bolt locking lugs, firing pin, striker and even the mounts for a telescopic sight. Because the proof is in the shooting, you will see dramatic footage of the test firing of the finished gun. This is a great video for those who want to learn more about the gun building process. Color, 60 mins.

So, I guess the barrel is taken care of.
Vader,
If the fricking gov't would hurry up with my PAL, I would be looking at a Rem 700 BDL this summer.
