Four seats on the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System Board of Education were up for general election on August 7, 2014. Incumbents in Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7 were up for re-election.

Incumbents Jimmie Garland, George Giles and Josh Baggett were re-elected. Newcomer Willie J. Freeman won the District 3 seat.[1]

Only District 5 incumbent Jimmie Garland had a challenger, Carmen Annette Gentry. District 1 and District 7 incumbents, George Giles and Josh Baggett, ran unopposed for re-election. District 3 newcomer Willie J. Freeman also ran unopposed.[2]

Clarksville-Montgomery County School System is located in Montgomery County, Tennessee. The county seat of Montgomery County is Clarksville. Montgomery County is home to 184,119 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] In the 2011-2012 school year, Clarksville-Montgomery County School System was the seventh-largest school district in Tennessee and served 30,614 students.[4]

Demographics

Montgomery County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Tennessee in terms of education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 22.7 percent of Montgomery County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 23.5 percent for Tennessee as a whole. The median household income for Montgomery County was $49,459 compared to $44,140 for the state of Tennessee. The percentage of people below poverty level for Montgomery County was 16.2 percent while it was 17.3 percent for the state of Tennessee.[3]

Voter and candidate information

The Clarksville-Montgomery County Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms by specific geographic district. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on August 7, 2014. Four seats were up for election in 2014.[6]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was April 3, 2014, and the deadline to withdraw was April 10, 2014.[7]

District 5 incumbent Jimmie Garland received endorsements from both the Clarksville-Montgomery County Voters Council and the Clarksville-Montgomery County League Of Voter Empowerment.[8][9]
