Man critical after balcony fall
A police investigation has begun after a man fell 25ft (7.6m) from the balcony of a nightclub in Gateshead.

The man, who has not been named, was found on the concrete banks of the River Tyne at the Baja Beach Club early on Monday.

He was taken to Newcastle General Hospital, where his condition is described as critical.

A fire brigade river launch was used in the operation to recover the injured man from an area close to mud flats.

The venue, near to the Swing Bridge spanning the Tyne, is one of the area's most popular nightspots.
