Weather Channel Trying Risque Ratings Ploy?
« on: September 15, 2010, 03:51:30 PM »
An interesting trend has started recently that I didn't really take notice of until yesterday morning. For months now, I have noticed the wardrobe of the female OCMs has been more casual than business like (with only Kim Perez seeming to remain tied to business suits and the like.) Skirts and semi-low cut blouses have become rather common place, but then it wasn't anything to really take notice of. The conspiracy theorist in us didn't have enough to go on to say that the Weather Channel was adopting the Fox News ideology of "more flesh = more ratings." Until the last two days that is.

On Monday and Tuesday, Stephanie Abrams, who hosts possibly the most popular show on the Weather Channel by sheer necessity (since most people do still tune into the Weather Channel in the mornings, at least for a few minutes, to grab a quick forecast) had a bit of a revealing choice in wardrobe. Is it a coincidence that she has been hiking up her hem line as more and more criticism came into the Weather Channel?

On Monday, her outfit's skirt was exceptionally short, coming well above the knee. It was short enough that one fan of the female OCMs on another board simply said "WOW!" in response to it. I saw the clips, and I agreed that it was shorter than usual, but perhaps it was just a one time thing.

Yesterday morning, the outfit Stephanie had on had an even shorter skirt (one that was short enough to be show off leg even while she was standing behind the banner at the bottom of the screen...it has been quite some time since anyone wore an outfit like that on TWC.)

So, is it possible that the Weather Channel, either by rule (such as the one at Fox News which dictates the length of skirts its female anchors can wear) or by implication (the old adage "sex sells"), that the female OCMs, or at least a few of them, have taken to wearing subtly sexier clothing in an attempt to turn the Weather Channel's fortunes around? Or is this simply a matter of new ownership allowing them to be more open with their wardrobes and we are seeing a sexier side to a few of the female meteorologists?

That's nothing.  We have weathergirls on a few of the local Spanish TV channels that would make Stephanie look like a tomboy.

agree with Harryca. the weatherbabes on the spanish network are so hot, they make ours look like george washington. anyway, nothing wrong with trying to sex up the weather a bit IMHO, it can be pretty boring to the average joe. on another note, if you have proof that fox news dictates how short skirts should be, that would be sexism. feel free to post proof of your claims, then we can take it from there. not that it really matters anyway.

LOL did I say I was complaining? =P

When I was in high school I used to call Kim Perez the queen of the mini-skirt because it always seemed like she wanted to wear shorter and shorter skirts. In addition, I remember in 2003 or 2004 Kristin Dodd wore a micro mini skirt once on the air. It was short enough that you saw an inch or two of her legs well above the black bar they had up at the bottom of the screen for forecasts. It was short enough that even my mom wondered if it was appropriate.

About the Spanish TV weather women, however, are they actually meteorologists, or are they just picked for their looks? Kind of like Jillian Barbarie giving the weather for that California station even though she probably couldn't even spell "hurricane" if you spotted her to first five letters.

Yeah, something like that.  Whoever does the hiring for the Spanish channels, sure knows how to pick 'em.  And as to whether they are actually meteorologists or not, in my opinon, who cares?   :-)

Stephanie was a decent enough reason to keep giving them second chances with her personality alone. Now that she seems to be into showing off "the gams" a bit more, I may never say anything bad about them again. Well, until they stick another episode of Storm Stories on in the middle of the afternoon, or if they decide to show a movie during a severe weather outbreak, or....

Like I always say, if they are showing it they should not get offended when we look at it.   ;)

Gee, I don't know, it would really hard to compete with those, Hailhunter.  These are the best ones I could find.  I'm sure there are better ones if one looked around.   :-)  BTW, the first one gets 5 stars.    =D>

Those seriously cannot be legit meteorologists though. Stephanie, Kim, and Nicole are meteorologists and beautiful. A double whammy (triple if you count in classy.)

The Weather Channel has proven that you can have beautiful and sexually appealing female meteorologists who actually know their field of science. What bothers me is the idea that a lot of networks have in taking an attractive woman, sticking her in front of a weather map, and calling her a weatherman.

That wouldn't fly in tornado alley, or down south, or even in the New England areas. These days, I'm surprised it still manages to go without issue in places like California.

On the flip side, however, if the Weather Channel has adopted a rule to have their meteorologists dress more alluring, I certainly cannot complain (as my list of videos earlier might attest to =P)

Watch out, Sugey pie!  You'll cause an accident!!

I laughed out loud when I saw these.

I've watched these about 20 times, and I'm still learning something new every time I watch.

Tulsa has Julie Chin for the local NBC affliliate, KJRH.  She knows her stuff, too.  Met her in person and she's about as nice a person as you'll ever meet.

She's also listed as a model on the stat sheet for that channel but that's just the way they roll TV down there.
