#1. A driver's license is:
The ability to operate a motor vehicle is an important privilege and comes with responsibilities. Every year 3,000 people are killed in traffic crashes in Texas and over 82,000 are seriously injured.
#2. Emotions affect your driving. If you feel angry, excited, or upset, you should:
If you are angry or excited, give yourself time to cool off. Take a short walk if necessary, but stay off the road until you have calmed down.
Each year road rage, also referred to as aggressive driving, causes hundreds of injuries and deaths. Aggressive driving occurs when a driver becomes angry or irritated as a result, fails to follow the rules of the road.
#3. Which of the following may use a lane marked with this sign?
High occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes are identified by a white diamond painted on the roadway. Signs will identify the types of vehicles and the number of occupants required per vehicle to use the lane.
#4. What does this sign mean?
Pedestrian crossing. You are near an area where a large number of pedestrians cross the street. Slow down and watch for people crossing the street on foot.
#5. It is a very windy day. A dust storm blows across the highway, reducing your visibility. You should drive slower and turn on your:
If you drive into fog, dust, smoke, or any area of reduced visibility, reduce your speed and turn on your low beams.
#6. When you park on a hill headed downhill, and there is no curb, you should turn your front wheels:
Headed downhill with no curb, turn the wheels to the right or side of the road, so the car will roll away from the center of the road if the brakes fail.
Remember, when you park on a hill, the general rule is to turn your wheels sharply toward the side of the road or curb. This way, if your vehicle starts to roll downhill, it will roll away from traffic. However, when headed uphill at a curb, you should turn the front wheels in the opposite direction, away from the curb and towards the road. Then, let your vehicle roll backwards until the back of your front wheel touches the curb. The curb will stop your car from rolling into traffic.
#7. An arrow panel displaying this message means:
Move or merge left. Begin your merge well in advance of the sign.
Large flashing or sequencing arrow panels may be used in work zones day and night to guide drivers into certain traffic lanes and to inform them part of the road or street ahead is closed.
#8. A white cloth tied to a radio antenna or a door handle indicates:
If your vehicle breaks down on a highway, move your car off the pavement to the side of the road. If you cannot get the car off the pavement, get everyone out of the car and off the road. Portable warning devices should be used to warn oncoming traffic. Tie a white cloth to your radio antenna, door handle, or some other place where it may be easily seen. If you do not have a white cloth, raise your hood.
#9. A rule of thumb for calculating safe distance between you and the car ahead is the:
A good driver always keeps a safe distance from the car in front of him/her. The faster you drive the greater the distance you should keep from the car ahead of you. For speeds under 30 mph, the minimum time with good road conditions is two seconds. For speeds above 30 mph, maintain four seconds (more for adverse conditions) of following time. Developing a four-second following interval is the best practice for a beginning or less experienced driver.
The two-second rule does not mean that you are able to stop within two seconds.
#10. When a traffic signal is showing a flashing red light, you must:
A flashing red traffic light has the same meaning as a stop sign. Stop completely before entering the crosswalk or intersection then proceed when you can do so safely. Vehicles on the intersecting road may not have to stop.
A green signal will not appear.

How to Use the Learner Practice Tests
Most of us prefer to read something other than a driver’s manual. It takes too long, and we will give up before finishing it. That is why you searched for a website like this. You want quick answers without putting too much effort into it.
Right?
Each TX sample test on this website has ten random questions picked from a database with more than 500 questions. We guarantee that you will cover everything you need to know for the final DPS exam.
But practice tests will only help if you use them correctly.
Be active. Compare questions and answers in the test with information in the Texas Driver Handbook . It is a good idea to keep the handbook handy and use it to look up questions and answers when you are uncertain.
While these practice tests give you all the answers you need, memorizing them does not guarantee success on the Texas licensing test. Suppose you put isolated phrases or pieces of information in the wrong context. In that case, you will likely get facts mixed up or even wrong.
Stop and think for a second or two after each question when taking a practice test. Is this familiar? Would it share a hashtag with something else? Take a second look at the incorrect choices.
Knowing what is wrong is just as important as knowing what is right.
When is the Texas Knowledge Test Required?
If you apply for your first original Texas license or learner’s permit, you must always pass a knowledge test.
If you are under 25, you must take a driver’s education course before applying for a learner’s license. This course includes the DPS-approved knowledge exam. If you pass this course, you don’t have to take any other knowledge test for your permit.

Texas DPS does not require a written test if you are an adult holding and surrendering a valid, unexpired driver’s license from another US state or US territory. It also applies if you are 18 or older and hold a valid out-of-country license from Canada, France, South Korea, or Germany. All other citizens with an out-of-country driver’s license must pass the written knowledge exam.
If you are under 18 years with a license or permit from a country other than the US or Canada, you must always pass the knowledge test. If you are a minor, there is no exception if you hold a license from France, South Korea, or Germany.
What You Should Know about the DMV Written Test
TX DPS designs the official written knowledge test to test your:
- Ability to identify and understand highway signs in English that regulate, warn, or direct traffic.
- Knowledge of the traffic laws of this state.
- Understanding of motorists’ rights and responsibilities in relation to bicyclists.
- Knowledge of the effect of using a wireless communication device or engaging in other actions that may distract a driver.
DPS bases the questions on the written test of information in the Texas Driver Handbook. Make sure you read the handbook. Skipping the manual is a risky tactic!

The Texas Driver Handbook is available at your local DPS office or via the Department’s website.
At a DPS office, you take your test at a computerized test station. Read the instructions before you start. You can skip questions that you don’t know the answer to. They will appear again at the end of the rest unless you have already reached a passing score. The test will finish when you have passed.
You can also take the written test as part of a driving course at an approved driving school or through an authorized third-party tester. Nowadays, you can even take the Texas exam online from the comfort of your home.
If you fail a test, you cannot retake the test on the same day. It is a good idea to read the handbook and practice some more!
After 90 days or three failed attempts, you must apply for a license again and pay a new application fee.
How Many Questions are on the Texas DMV Written Test?

You may bring a translator if you don’t speak English or Spanish, but the translator cannot help you during the test.
